Case Studies - Go Green Widcombe

We plan to build a library of relevant case studies of completed retrofit projects. Here are the first 15 – all from the Green Open Homes initiative [see below]. We’re always looking for more, so get in touch.

Green Open Homes – why retrofit open days are so inspiring

With support from partners, sponsors, volunteers and staff Bath & West Community Energy organised 10 Green Open Homes events over the course of 2023 and 2024 in Bath, Radstock, Pensford, Chew Magna, Chew Stoke and East Harptree and Peasedown St John.

Homes openers were able to share their knowledge and experience of energy saving measures implemented to make their homes more energy efficient with visitors. Some 1600 visitors across all events learnt how they might make their own homes warmer and reduce energy bills. Studies of Green Open Homes events in the UK tells us some 70% of visitors then go on to implement retrofit measures in their own homes. Many events also included “ask the experts” opportunities for people to talk to contractors, local grant providers, energy survey teams and domestic retrofit project advisors.

Visitors were able to see a wide variety of homes, spanning Georgian, listed, Victorian, modern and art deco, showcasing energy saving features including solar panels, heat pumps, wall and floor insulation and bio diverse gardens and vegetable growing. Many open homes also demonstrated effective low-cost DIY measures so visitors with a range of budgets for their own energy saving journey can find inspiration from realistic solutions.
