Thermal Imaging Camera (TIC)
GGW have been providing their Thermal Imaging Camera (TIC) for local households to use for a number of years now. It is best used during the heating season [October to March/April].
This device shows where there are cold spots around your property (be that windows, doors, attic, walls etc) which gives an idea of where you need to consider taking action to reduce heat loss. Cold areas are in blue and warm areas in red.
Images from a Local Household (Door Panels)
This image was provided by a Local Householder who used Go Green Widcombe’s TIC last Winter (2024/25). It shows that the main area for heat loss on an external door in the property was at the bottom of the door (the dark blue areas). Plus the lower areas of the windows were slightly colder also.
Images from a Local Household (Door Frame & Skirting Board)
These two sets of images were also provided by the same Local Householder who used Go Green Widcombe’s TIC last Winter (2024/25). The image on the left shows heat loss at the base of the French Windows in the property, plus there are signs of heat loss on the adjoining wall (next to the shutters). The image on the right shows cold spots (again in blue) at the bottom of the door… particularly on the sides. This turned out to be due to cracks where the skirting boards join the floorboards. This led the Householder to the conclusion that they needed to fit beading or a carpet.
Feedback from Local Households (after using the Thermal Imaging Camera):
It did help us to identify areas that were showing as colder. When we investigated this further we could see that the insulation was in fact missing in areas. We have since had our windows and main door replaced which has also helped with the warmth.
It is a great tool to use even if it just highlights to the family members about how heat works within a home. This then makes them think about what they are doing and how they can improve their lifestyles.
We have found this extraordinarily useful. As a result, we are having secondary glazing on top of some of our double glazing, have improved our insulation around doors and anticipating new skylights.
I now have a task list of various things that need doing. These cover bottom of 2 external doors and some external wall skirtings. One surprise was how cold some external walls were in alcoves. I imagine I could put in some insulation in these areas.
